Iran Signals Openness to Nuclear-Weapon-Free Treaty

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told ambassadors in a televised address that Tehran is willing to sign an international agreement confirming its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, while safeguarding its right to peaceful nuclear technology, Orda.kz reports.
…Tehran initially considers nuclear weapons to be prohibited and does not intend to create them. However, Iran will not agree to a treaty that deprives the country of its legitimate nuclear rights, Araghchi stated.
He also urged the global community to condemn Israel’s actions and to help establish regional peace.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Garibabadi has also announced a significant reduction in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), hinting at Iran’s potential withdrawal from the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
According to him:
- Cooperation with IAEA “no longer makes sense” if the agency continues to ignore Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites
- Snapback sanctions could prompt Iran’s exit from the NPT — notifications were sent to relevant organizations years ago
