Hungary’s Hortobágy National Park will deliver a group of Przewalski’s horses to Kazakhstan in June, Orda.kz reports. The relocation is part of a broader conservation program first announced in March.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that eight horses will be transported next month as part of the effort to reintroduce the endangered species to its historical range. The Budapest Zoo provided additional details, noting that the Czech Republic, responsible for last year’s successful transfer, will again assist in the operation.
The journey will begin in Pentezug, Hungary, with the horses first transported by truck to Hortobágy. From there, a Czech Air Force cargo plane will fly them to Kazakhstan, where they will then be moved by truck to their final destination: the Altyn Dala reserve in the Qostanay region.
This reserve, spanning nearly half a million hectares, already hosts Przewalski’s horses introduced in 2024.
The Budapest Zoo stated that the five-year relocation initiative will involve a total of 40 horses. The reintroduction project aims to restore the Przewalski’s horse population in Kazakhstan, once a key part of the species’ natural range before it disappeared from the wild.
