Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has refused to halt purchases of Russian oil, despite demands from U.S. President Donald Trump, Orda.kz reports.
Speaking on Tuesday, Szijjártó said Hungary cannot ensure a safe energy supply without Russian resources.
Incidentally, pipelines transporting said oil have been subject to drone attacks.
“For us, energy supplies are a purely physical question,” he told The Guardian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Szijjártó noted that while it may be “nice to dream” about sourcing energy elsewhere, Hungary is limited by infrastructure.
We can’t ensure the safe supply [of energy products] for our country without Russian oil or gas sources, he said, adding that he understands Trump’s push for NATO allies to cut Russian imports.
