On August 31, the Houthis detained 11 United Nations employees in Yemen and in areas under their control, Orda.kz reports.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the actions of the Houthis, who not only carried out the detentions but also forced their way into UN offices, seized UN property, and attempted to take control of UN facilities in Sana’a.
I strongly reiterate my demand for the immediate and unconditional release of those detained today, as well as all other personnel from the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society and diplomatic missions who have been arbitrarily detained since June 2024 and those held since 2021 and 2023. The continued arbitrary detention of all such persons is intolerable.Guterres stated.
He emphasized that UN partners and staff should never be targeted, arrested, or detained while carrying out their duties for the organization.
The UN will continue working to secure the full release of its employees and to support the people of Yemen.
Earlier, on August 28, the head of the Houthi government and several ministers were killed.
