The suspects are accused of stealing pine seedlings intended for landscaping and forest restoration in the Semey Ormany reserve, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the alleged leader of the group and several accomplices were detained.
Authorities seized 260,000 seedlings valued at more than 500 million tenge.
The organized crime group included local residents and former employees of the state nature reserve ‘Semey Ormany,'
the Ministry’s press service stated.
In 2023, a significant fire damaged 66 hectares of forest in the reserve. The reforestation process is now underway using specialized Swedish equipment. Last year, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov directed law enforcement to intensify oversight of illegal logging activities.
In the summer of 2024, police arrested more than 20 individuals, including a branch director of the reserve, for timber theft.
