Government for Citizens Official Implicated in Illegal Gold Mining

An official from Government for Citizens has been implicated in an illegal gold mining scheme that caused environmental damage exceeding 300 million tenge, Orda.kz reports.
The East Kazakhstan Department of the Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA) revealed details of a criminal case involving unauthorized precious metal extraction and illegal subsoil use in the Shybyndy River valley of the Ulan District.
One of the deputy directors of the local branch of Government for Citizens non-profit joint-stock company organized the illegal development of a gold mine using EastGoldStone LLC, a subsidiary of the agency. The mining operation lasted two years without a license, employing heavy equipment and altering the riverbed. Environmental damage exceeded 300 million tenge, the Financial Monitoring Agency reported.
During searches, authorities seized 6.7 kilograms of gold worth 382 million tenge, along with 10 million tenge and $56,000 in cash. With court approval, the property was confiscated, and the defendants were placed in custody for two months.
