The former head of the "East" regional command of the Ministry of Defense has been arrested, Orda.kz reports, citing the Anti-Corruption Service (Antikor).
The arrest was announced during the final briefing of Antikor as an independent agency.
According to official representative Daniyar Bigaidarov, security forces detained and opened a case against the retired major general, who previously led the regional command “East.”
By abusing the trust of a bona fide businessman and using the authority of a high-ranking military man, he took possession of funds on an especially large scale, Bigaidarov said.
Investigators say the general persuaded an entrepreneur to invest in a social project allegedly being carried out with the involvement of foreign partners and senior officials.
According to Orda.kz sources, the individual in question is Major General Nurlan Kashaganov, who assumed command in 2016.
