In Almaty, officers from the Drug Crime Unit detained two women in possession of hashish and mephedrone. One of the suspects was a former employee of the internal affairs agencies, Orda.kz sources reports.
During the search, law enforcement discovered three and a half kilograms of illegal substances. A detainee also had an official police ID.
The search of the rented apartment led to the seizure of narcotics. A forensic chemical examination will determine the exact composition and origin of the substances. The suspects have been placed in a temporary detention facility, and further details are under investigation, the Almaty police department stated.

The editorial team also obtained images from the search. A photo of the official ID suggests that one of the detainees previously worked as an investigator for the Qaraganda Police.
However, the Qaraganda Regional Police Department clarified that "the detainee, Yelena V., resigned voluntarily on August 29, 2024."
This is not the first case of law enforcement officers being implicated in drug trafficking.
In May 2022, a police officer in Aqtobe was arrested for stealing drugs that were meant to be used as evidence in criminal cases. He was later convicted on charges of drug trafficking and forgery.
