Former Almaty Officials Given Lengthy Terms in Construction Fraud Case
Former high-ranking Almaty officials responsible for coordinating permits for constructing luxury residential complexes have been found guilty of corruption crimes and sentenced to long prison terms, Orda.kz reports.
A specialized criminal court has sentenced:
- Former chief architect Almaskhan Akhmedzhanov to 11 years
- Former land relations head Ardak Samambetov to 10 years
- Former land management head Yerlan Zharmukhanbetov to 14 years
Two entrepreneurs received five-year probation terms, while an appraisal company director got eight years in prison.
The officials approved the construction of multi-apartment complexes on land designated for private homes, allowing developers to avoid paying proper cadastral values. The court examined 25 cases of illegal permit approvals.
Akhmedzhanov has claimed the charges were fabricated and denied wrongdoing.
The defendants have 15 working days to appeal.
