Altay Kulginov has denied speculation that his appointment as Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Estonia amounted to a “political sidelining,” Orda.kz reports.
Kulginov, who stepped down as mayor of Astana three years ago, was appointed ambassador in May 2024.
Speaking with journalists the other day on the sidelines of Aqorda, he pushed back against claims that the diplomatic post was a demotion.
You’ve just offended all ambassadors. An ambassador is a responsible political position at the international level. I’m proud that the state has entrusted me with this job,
the diplomat said.
Reporters also reminded him of the persistent public dissatisfaction during his tenure as akim of the capital.
Kulginov responded that criticism comes with the job.
There have been and will be complaints — that’s natural. The president personally oversees the development of the capital, as it is the country’s main city. Criticism is natural, because when there’s criticism, development happens. It’s a normal working process,
he stated.
