The “City of Nomads” set complex, originally built for the filming of the movie Nomads, has been transferred to the Akimat of Qonayev under a deed of gift and will be developed into a tourist attraction, Orda.kz reports.
Located on the left bank of the Ili River, the property is valued at 15.4 million tenge, a price the Akimat explained as modest due to its deteriorated condition.
“The area of the complex is 5.8 hectares. Today, some of the structures are destroyed, some architectural elements are lost,” officials in Qonayev said.
The site will now be managed by the housing and utilities department, which plans to fund maintenance and restoration.
Work on supporting infrastructure has already begun:
A new road is being built, almost 7 km long, 7 meters wide and with two traffic lanes. There will also be power lines, lighting and parking. Forty-one specialists and 24 units of equipment are involved in the construction. They promise to finish the road by the end of the year, the Akimat added.
Previously owned by Kazakhfilm, the complex was controversially sold in 2017 for a price 44 times lower than its construction cost to a company linked to former Culture and Sports Minister Arystanbek Mukhamediuly, later convicted on corruption charges.
