Former Croatian Ski Association head Vedran Pavlek has been detained in Almaty. In Croatia, he is suspected of involvement in the withdrawal of almost 30 million euros, Orda.kz reports, citing Nova TV.
Croatian Justice Minister Damir Habijan reported the detention. According to him, Croatia has already started the extradition procedure and is cooperating with Kazakh authorities.
We expect that after the competent authorities of Kazakhstan complete the procedure in accordance with their legislation, Vedran Pavlek will be extradited to Croatia as soon as possible, Habijan said.
The criminal case was opened at the end of March. Shortly before that, Pavlek left his post at the ski association. According to the investigation, he was involved in a corruption scheme to withdraw money.
Before his detention, Pavlek was in Turkey and then, presumably, traveled to Kazakhstan through Istanbul and Dubai. He spent about 10-15 days in Almaty.
Orda.kz has sent requests to the competent authorities and continues to monitor the case.
