On the outskirts of Petropavlovsk, plans are underway to plant 10,000 trees, Orda.kz reports, citing regional outlet Qazaqstan Media.
The initiative is being led by local environmental activists aiming to restore a forest area near the Voroniy Ostrov micro-district, previously destroyed by fire. To support the project, they reached out to Russian blogger and philanthropist Alexey Sibirsky, known for his work on forest restoration and waterway clean-up projects worldwide.
Sibirsky agreed to sponsor planting 10,000 trees on Vorony Island and is expected to attend the event, which is scheduled for late April.
I wrote to Alexey, and he agreed to come here. Last year, we couldn't organize the planting. We decided to postpone it until this year. He buys the seedlings, covers the costs of soil preparation by the forestry department,
local eco-activist Dinara Omurzakova told the media.
This is not Sibirsky’s first environmental project in Kazakhstan.
Last fall, he organized a tree-planting campaign in Semey. In 2022, after Russia announced mobilization, he temporarily relocated to Kazakhstan.
