Russian military blogger Oleg Blokhin said the base's alert system was activated around 2:30 AM local time.
The military correspondent attributed the attack to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group that ousted the Asaad regime.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not officially commented.
Bloomberg recently reported that Moscow is working on an agreement to maintain access to its military installations in Syria - the Khmeimim air base and the naval facility in Tartus.
