Almaty Akim Yerbolat Dosayev has denied permission for a demonstration demanding his resignation, Orda.kz reports.
Lawyer and activist Murat Adam, who submitted the request to hold the demonstration, shared the update on Facebook. According to him, activists had planned to gather on May 24 at Amangeldy Imanov Square to call for Dosayev’s resignation.
However, the city authorities claimed the square would be occupied on that day.
We requested permission to hold the demonstration on May 24, 2025, at Amangeldy Imanov Square, any time between 10:00 and 18:00. But we were denied only for the time slot from 12:00 to 15:00. So technically, we could hold it outside that window. But under the law, if the requested location is unavailable, the authorities are required to offer an alternative venue. Yet, as usual, when the topic involves the Akim of Almaty, Yerbolat Dosayev, all demonstration spots suddenly become 'booked',Adam wrote.
He stated that he plans to challenge the Akimat's decision in court.
Apparently, they were in such a rush to deny us that they completely overlooked the Administrative Procedural Code, skipping the required preliminary hearing. Now, do you understand how this question about Dosayev’s resignation makes them nervous? The Akimat officials simply ignored our laws, or they don’t know our laws at all! They just wanted to refuse the demonstration faster! Adam said.
This isn't the first time public discontent has surfaced. In 2022, around 100 people gathered in Almaty to protest against Yerbolat Dosayev.
