In the Kerbulak district, 49-year-old Yerlan Zhumadilov, a member of the district maslikhat, was detained, Orda.kz reports.
In the village of Basshi, police found two live saker falcons and a homemade hunting net in Zhumadilov’s summer kitchen. These birds are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and sell for large sums on the black market, primarily for hunting and illegal export.
The notable detail is that the deputy works in a national park.
This period marks the height of the saker falcon season, when the birds migrate to warmer regions and are under strict protection from poachers. Reportedly, Zhumadilov and two accomplices ambushed the birds in the Takyr area and captured them.
Sources told Orda.kz that the arrest was conducted by officers of the Internal Security Directorate, who received information about the attempted sale of the falcons.
An investigation has now been launched against the deputy under Part 1 of Article 339 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan — illegal treatment of rare and endangered animals.
