Detention Facility Employee in Astana Sentenced for Accepting Bribes

A staff member at a temporary detention facility in Astana has been sentenced for accepting bribes in exchange for allowing detainees access to mobile phones, Orda.kz reports.
According to the court, the officer took money from individuals held at the facility across 26 separate incidents. The total amount received approached two million tenge. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.
Two accomplices who paid the bribes were each sentenced to three years. One additional person was fined. The remaining 23 individuals involved were not penalized, as the court found they had acted under pressure and had no prior convictions.
