Fear of military service in Kazakhstan is not primarily due to deaths among those serving, according to the Ministry of Defense, Orda.kz reports.
Speaking with reporters in the Senate, Deputy Minister Sultan Kamaletdinov addressed concerns about why many young people are hesitant to join the army.
He pointed to broader social and psychological factors:
First of all, it's the family, nurseries, school. And young people who are afraid (there really is fear), they are used to living in a comfort zone. They are used to freedom, used to a structured kind of life. And here they must change. Of course, this causes fear.
He emphasized that the issue goes beyond individual reluctance.
"This is not just his personal problem. This is our common problem that we must solve together," Kamaletdinov added.
When asked whether fear might stem from reports of deaths among military personnel, Kamaletdinov responded:
"People die not only in the armed forces. They die in schools, in nurseries, unfortunately, and on the roads. So, I would not focus on this."
He noted that army-related deaths have significantly decreased in recent years.
However, when asked to provide exact figures for the past year, the Deputy Minister was unable to answer.
