Kazakhstan is considering tougher liability for the use of fake license plates, Orda.kz reports.
Deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek raised the issue of increasing punishment for drivers who use falsified registration plates.
A lot of people are suffering. There are many accidents where it later turns out that the person responsible was using fake state license plates. For a very long time, many wealthy people and their children have used fake plates. This is not only happening in Almaty, but in other regions as well. Ordinary people suffer, and the budget loses a great deal.Bazarbek said.
He noted that criminal law currently does not effectively regulate the use of fake plates. Liability is mainly предусмотрена for their manufacture, while their use is covered by administrative legislation.
Under Article 590 of the Administrative Code, installing fake license plates is currently punishable by a fine of about 15 MCI, while driving a car with such plates can lead to a fine or the loss of driving privileges.
What is 15 MCI? He pays the fine and is satisfied. Meanwhile, people have died because of such incidents. For a repeat offense, it is 20 MCI or deprivation of driving rights for one year. Many people have died on the roads. We are not living in wartime, we are living in peacetime. Maybe it is time to move from administrative liability to criminal liability?Bazarbek said.
The Interior Ministry supported the initiative. Deputy Interior Minister Sanzhar Adilov said the proposal had been accepted for further work. The ministry has already begun discussing possible changes as part of a broader revision of criminal legislation.
