Plant quarantine inspectors stopped two large batches of infected produce at a phytosanitary checkpoint on the border with China, Orda.kz reports.
The total weight of the cargo was 39.52 tons, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
During inspection and laboratory testing, specialists found oriental fruit moths in 19 tons of Chinese peaches. The pest damages fruit and young shoots.
Another batch, containing 20 tons of carrots, was found to be infected with golden potato nematode, a pest that can destroy up to 80% of a crop. Both pests are listed as quarantine organisms.
All infected products were returned to China. Administrative cases were opened against the cargo owners.
The ministry said the spread of such pests into Kazakhstan could threaten food security and cause serious crop losses for local farmers.
