Cyclone Chido in Mayotte: Toqayev Expresses Condolences to Macron

President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev sent a telegram of condolences to Emmanuel Macron concerning the devastating effects of Cyclone Chido on the Mayotte archipelago, Orda.kz reports.
The presidential press service reports that the Head of Kazakhstan expressed “deep condolences to the affected families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.”
On the night of December 14, the most powerful storm in the last 90 years, Chido, hit the French archipelago of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. The exact number of victims is still unknown.
The prefect of the region said that the death toll could reach hundreds or even thousands of people.
The French Interior Ministry said it would be difficult to establish the number of victims.
Mayotte residents observing Islamic traditions bury the dead within 24 hours. France sent medicines, humanitarian aid, and soldiers and rescuers to the island.
