Customs Laboratory Head Convicted of Bribery

The Almaly District Court of Almaty sentenced Satybaldiev, head of the city central customs laboratory, and Alibekov, chief specialist, to seven years, Orda.kz reports, citing the anti-corruption service.
They were found guilty of accepting bribes from business owners for the accelerated issuance of customs expert reports.
Antikor also reports that the court fined customs brokers for giving bribes.
The Central Customs Laboratory is an institution subordinate to the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance. It is responsible for testing goods crossing the customs border to determine their composition, quality, and compliance with the law.
Its main task is to combat smuggling and protect the domestic market from unsafe, low-quality products.
