Convicted businessman Kairat Boranbayev, once among Kazakhstan’s most prominent oligarchs, unexpectedly withdrew his petition to ease the terms of his restricted freedom, Orda.kz reports.
Court Hearing
According to the case schedule of Criminal Court No. 2 in Almaty's Bostandyq District, Boranbayev’s request was set to be heard on October 2.
To the surprise of observers, he withdrew it.
“During the court hearing, the court dismissed his appeal without consideration,” — Almaty City Court press service.
Background
Boranbayev, an in-law of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, was sentenced in 2023 to eight years in prison for embezzlement and money laundering. His sentence was later reduced to six years and then commuted to restricted freedom. He was released under supervision soon afterward.
Although out of prison, Boranbayev remains under probation. He is barred from leaving his home at night, traveling abroad, or changing residence without official approval. Any violation could result in his return to jail.
As part of his criminal case, authorities confiscated billions of dollars’ worth of assets.
