Scientists are working to identify the remains of a prehistoric reptile found in Kazakhstan’s Qyzylorda region, Orda.kz reports.
Researchers from the Qyzylorda Museum of History and Local Lore uncovered the fossils in the Shakh-Shakh Gorge of the Qarmaqshy District during an expedition on October 7–8.
According to Askhat Sailau, a scientific secretary at the museum, the team has not yet determined the species but is certain the bones belong to an ancient reptile that lived during the Cretaceous period.
We now need to conduct a detailed analysis to establish which dinosaur these bones belonged to. This process will take at least several months, Sailau told Orda.kz.
He added that the lengthy timeline is partly due to the shortage of paleontologists in Kazakhstan.
This isn’t the first significant find in the Shakh-Shakh Gorge. In the late 1950s, Soviet paleontologist Anatoly Rozhdestvensky unearthed the remains of another prehistoric reptile there — later named Aralosaurus.
