Bishkek International Film Festival Highlights Rising Cinema
Kazakhstani Yerlan Toleutay wins Best Actor Award
The 3rd Bishkek International Film Festival took place in Kyrgyzstan’s capital, continuing to build its reputation as a key cultural event in the region. International guests — including British actor Dominic West and Italian star Michele Placido — joined filmmakers, producers, and critics from across Central Asia and beyond.
A notable addition this year was KyrgyzBox, a competition section showcasing commercially successful local films, alongside the main international and Central Asian categories.
The KyrgyzBox jury screened nine films spanning genres like fantasy, procedural drama, and horror, many tackling serious social themes such as domestic violence and family abandonment.

Films like Kyzyl Koynok, District Inspector Marat, Och, and Kuresh explored these topics through genre storytelling that felt both urgent and culturally grounded. Others, including Ashygym, Ifrit, and Kyrgyzstan on Mars, touched on patriotism, tradition, and generational identity.
The festival also reflected the energy of a young, collaborative film industry. Q&A sessions were vibrant, and many filmmakers — often in their 20s or 30s — were active in organizing, promoting, and participating.
A strong producer network and structured release calendar show how Kyrgyz cinema is evolving not only creatively but also logistically.
Across all programs, the festival demonstrated that Kyrgyzstan’s film scene is growing in ambition, voice, and relevance, with an audience ready to meet it.
