A court in Stepnogorsk has approved an amnesty request filed by Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, a relative of former Economy Minister Kuandyk Bishimbayev.
Baizhanov was convicted of concealing a particularly serious crime involving homicide and torture, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Stepnogorsk City Court, Baizhanov submitted a petition under the law “On Amnesty in Connection with the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”
The court also received a formal submission from the correctional facility recommending a reduction in his sentence.
The court granted the motion against convicted Baizhanov. In accordance with Part 2 of Article 78 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, persons convicted of committing a serious or especially serious crime may have their sentence reduced. By virtue of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'On Amnesty in Connection with the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan', the terms or amounts of the unserved portion of the main punishment in the event of compensation for damages or in their absence are reduced by one third for serious crimes,
the court stated.
At the time of the ruling, Baizhanov had two years and 24 days remaining on his sentence. As a result of the decision, eight months and eight days were deducted from his term.
"The final sentence to be served is one year, four months and 17 days of imprisonment,"
the court added.
This means Baizhanov should be scheduled for release in the second half of November 2026.
On May 13, 2024, Baizhanov was convicted under Article 432 of the Criminal Code ("Concealment of a particularly serious crime") and sentenced to four years in prison.
The court found that he assisted Kuandyk Bishimbayev in covering up the torture and homicide of his partner, Saltanat Nukenova. Bishimbayev received a 24-year sentence in the widely publicized case.
In June 2025, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Abai Kaiyrbekov stated that Baizhanov had not applied for parole.
