Azerbaijan is preparing to file claims in international courts against Russia over the crash of an AZAL aircraft. President Ilham Aliyev announced the move during a media forum in Shusha, Orda.kz reports, citing Minval.
Aliyev said the situation surrounding the crash is “clear as day.” Despite multiple requests, Baku has not received a clear response from Moscow seven months after the incident near Aqtau.
He called Russia’s position counterproductive.
According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan now has enough evidence to present its case in international legal bodies and is prepared to wait, just as Malaysia did in the MH17 case.
Earlier, Minval published a note allegedly written by a Russian serviceman claiming the plane was shot down near Grozny.
During his speech, Aliyev also addressed Ukrainians, urging them not to accept territorial losses and to follow Azerbaijan’s example in reclaiming land.
All our arguments about international law, about the four UN Security Council resolutions demanding Armenian troop withdrawal — all of it was met with arrogant advice to accept the realities. So we decided to create new realities,
he said.
In 2023, Azerbaijan regained control of Karabakh, leading to the departure of nearly the entire Armenian population from the region.
These statements come amid strained relations between Moscow and Baku.
