A major investigation into the misuse of funds from Kazakhstan’s Unified Accumulative Pension Fund (UAPF) is escalating in Atyrau, an Orda.kz correspondent reports.
What began as reports of pension savings being withdrawn through private dental clinics has turned into one of the region’s largest financial crime cases in recent years.
In mid-September, the Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA) carried out mass searches of dental clinics in Atyrau. Investigators say one clinic embezzled more than 22 billion tenge, another 20 billion, a third 18 billion, a fourth 13 billion, and a fifth about nine billion.
Searches extended beyond the city into districts such as Jylyoi.
The investigative court approved the arrest of several suspects. Some were placed in pretrial detention, others under house arrest, while some were restricted from travel. Accounts linked to the defendants were frozen.
The FMA later released new evidence: during searches, luxury cars were seized from suspects. A video published by the agency shows the vehicles parked on the premises of the regional Department of Economic Investigations.
Among the seized fleet are a Mercedes-Benz G63, BMW XM 50e, BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, Porsche Taycan, BMW X5, Toyota Land Cruiser 200, and Lexus ES 300h.
Together, they are valued at more than 600 million tenge.
“The search for illicitly acquired property continues,” the FMA stated.
The court will decide whether the vehicles were acquired legally.
Investigators remain in Atyrau as the probe expands. According to sources, the cash-out scheme has already been traced, and attention is shifting to intermediaries and agents.
The so-called “dentistry case” is now a wide-ranging investigation involving dozens of suspects, billions of dollars in frozen assets, and hundreds of millions of dollars in seized property.
