Antiquities seized as part of efforts to return illegally acquired assets will be handed over to the state treasury, Orda.kz reports. A formal ceremony will be held to mark the occasion.
The Company for the Management of Returned Assets (CMRA) announced that on May 29 at 11:00 a.m., unique historical and cultural items—previously owned by an individual implicated in anti-corruption investigations — will be officially transferred to the National Museum's treasury.
“The event will be accompanied by commentary from archaeologists, art historians, and representatives of government agencies,” CMRA stated.
The items in question are believed to include high-value jewelry and artworks confiscated in August of last year from relatives of a prominent oligarch. At the time, the Committee for the Return of Assets under the Prosecutor General’s Office estimated the collection’s value at over $10 million. Among the artifacts were gold items dating back to the Saka (Scythian) era.
The name of the oligarch whose relatives were forced to relinquish the artifacts was not disclosed by the committee.
