Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev has commented on whether he intends to run for the position of Speaker of Kazakhstan’s future unicameral Parliament.
Speaking to journalists, he said discussions about potential candidates are premature, Orda.kz reports.
Right now, we're just discussing it; 2026, 2027, and 2028 are just around the corner. It's still too early to make any predictions, so I think all this talk is pure speculation,
said Maulen Ashimbayev.
He added that senators are currently focused on completing all necessary legislation before the end of the year.
President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev previously proposed abolishing the Senate and transitioning to a reformed single-chamber legislature in his September 8 address.
A nationwide referendum on this restructuring is scheduled for 2027.
