Armenian President Signs Law Declaring Intent to Join European Union

Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has signed a law approved by parliament declaring the country’s intent to join the European Union, Orda.kz reports.
The bill, titled "On Initiating the Process of Accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union," was passed by parliament with 64 votes in favor and seven against before being sent to the president for signature.
The law consists of a single article and affirms Armenia’s aspiration to move closer to the EU.
The Republic of Armenia, striving to develop democratic institutions, improve societal well-being, and strengthen security, resilience, and the rule of law, declares the initiation of the process of the Republic of Armenia’s accession to the European Union,
the law states.
Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan clarified that the law does not constitute an official application for EU membership, but rather reflects public sentiment and Yerevan’s foreign policy direction.
