Armenia’s Investigative Committee has charged a Foreign Ministry employee with state treason following information from the National Security Service, Orda.kz reports, citing ArmeniaNews.
The case, launched on June 20, 2025, involves allegations of transferring or facilitating access to state secrets for a foreign state and assisting hostile activity. The suspect has been placed under pre-trial detention.
Officials stressed that no other MFA staff were implicated and rejected media claims that the accused was a consul or high-ranking official.
On August 29, Hraparak reported, citing unnamed sources, that Ashkhen Aleksanyan, Armenia’s consul in Austria, was detained upon her return to Yerevan on suspicion of espionage in favor of Azerbaijan. The report does not specify the MFA employee's identity or specific position.
Hraparak claimed the arrest occurred two months ago and was kept under wraps to avoid controversy.
On the day of the alleged arrest, the National Security Service conducted a day-long search at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, examining computers and official records, The Caucasusian Knot writes.
