The Armenian government has offered support for a public initiative on EU membership after collecting 50,000 citizen signatures, Orda reports, citing News Armenia.
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan presented the project at Thursday's government meeting and indicated the government's favorable position.
Until a roadmap for Armenia is created, at least for now, nothing needs to be done. I am saying this so that the right expectations are formed in society, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during the meeting.
Pashinyan emphasized that EU membership would require a successful referendum and pointed to the need to develop a joint roadmap with the EU.
He highlighted recent progress in Armenia-EU relations, including ongoing visa liberalization talks and Armenia's participation in the "European Instrument for Peace."
The initiative gained momentum after Armenia's Central Election Commission validated over 50,000 signatures on December 10, 2024.
This validation allows for submitting a referendum bill to Parliament for consideration.
