Tehran continues to stress the urgency of signing a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling on Yerevan to take the issue seriously, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said at a Monday briefing, reports Orda.kz, citing IRNA.
Two key issues are being discussed in the region. The first is the peaceful settlement of disputes between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia. Iran consistently emphasizes the urgency and importance of signing the agreement, which will contribute to regional stability,
Baghaei stated.
As Armenia’s Foreign Ministry previously reported, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed at a July 10 meeting in Abu Dhabi to continue bilateral talks and confidence-building measures. They noted progress in border delimitation efforts and instructed relevant commissions to continue practical work.
Regarding transit routes, Baqaei emphasized that Iran supports regional economic growth and deeper cooperation — but stressed that expanding transport links must not violate national sovereignty, alter recognized borders, or disrupt the region’s geopolitical balance.
The transport routes in question include Azerbaijan’s proposed Zangezur Corridor, which would connect mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia’s Syunik Province, and Armenia’s alternative Crossroads of Peace plan, which envisions opening regional transit links without compromising national borders or sovereignty.
