Appeals have been submitted in the case concerning the killing of 16-year-old Sherzat Polat, lawyer Meirman Shekeyev confirmed, Orda.kz reports.
Shekeyev also addressed rumors regarding the victim’s father, Karzhaubay Nurymov, denying claims that he had been hospitalized.
I am in Alania now, and I am receiving many questions from Kazakhstanis. Some are asking if it is true that Karzhaubay aga (term referring to men in Kazakh - Ed.) was taken to intensive care. This is not true. Many are also asking about the appeal. I want to clarify: the appeal was received on June 21. Convicted persons have the right to file complaints within 15 days after the verdict. As far as I know, all those convicted intend to appeal the verdict. We will announce the date and time of the hearing,
said Shekeyev.
On June 5, the court in Taldykorgan found all the defendants guilty in the high-profile case. The investigation concluded that the fatal blow was delivered by Abzal Shynasyl, who received a 23-year prison sentence.
The other defendants were sentenced to terms ranging from 1.5 to 20 years.
The court also ordered moral damages: 60 million tenge from Shynasyl, 30 million from Sakiyev, and 30 million to be paid jointly by the remaining defendants. The victim’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the compensation amount.
Judge Yerzhan Zhanuzakov issued a separate ruling recommending that prosecutors investigate the actions of four witnesses, including Elmira Nurbekova and Dana Zhaksygeldy, who were present on the night of the incident.
The case will now proceed to the appellate court. The date of the hearing has not yet been announced.
