Appeal Opens in Wild Arman’s Case over January Unrest
An appeal has begun in the Almaty court in the case concerningthe unrest during the January (“Qantar”) events, Orda.kz reports.
Lawyer Oleg Chernov, who represents Arman Dzhumageldiev, confirmed the start of the appellate proceedings to an Orda.kz journalist.
Dzhumageldiev, also known as a well-known crime figure, was sentenced in January 2025 to 20 years in prison and prohibited from engaging in public or political activity. More than 40 defendants were involved in the same case.
Among them, former MP Kairat Kudaibergen received eight years, while Ruslan Iskakov, former head of the Fifth Department of the National Security Committee (KNB), was sentenced to 15 years. All were found guilty of organizing and participating in mass riots, kidnapping, and illegal possession of weapons.
Following his sentencing, Dzhumageldiev reportedly attempted to slit his wrists while in pretrial detention. His defense team told Orda.kz that the act was a form of protest, as he opposed being transferred to the Qostanay pre-trial detention center before his appeal was heard.
Orda.kz will continue to monitor the case as it develops.
