The young woman went missing the previous evening. Around 11:00 p.m., she sent a message to her family asking for help and never contacted them again, Orda.kz reports.
She was later found. According to NeMolchiKZ, she was abducted and sexually assaulted by a man she barely knew, who had previously tried to approach her.
According to her family, after the incident, the victim was questioned for several hours, “driven from one police station to another,” and only after a call from the prosecutor did officials begin to formalize the case.
We demand an urgent examination and the arrest of the rapist, who works as a taxi driver. Almost every young woman in Almaty is now in danger if she ends up in his car, the foundation stated.
Our editorial team contacted the city police department for comment. They said the suspect had already been detained and placed in a pretrial detention center. Immediately after the victim’s statement, Medeu District police opened a criminal case.
The investigation is ongoing.
