Almaty will assign names to 156 previously unnamed streets following a decision at an extraordinary session of the city council, Orda.kz reports.
According to Bakyt Kalymbet, head of the Department of Language Development and Onomastics, 22 streets will be named after World War II veterans, while 15 will honor prominent historical figures, including academics and Olympic medalist Denis Ten.
The remaining 119 streets will receive traditional historical and geographical names, Kalymbet told colleagues at the maslikhat session.
One of the streets will also bear the name of Vietnamese politician Ho Chi Minh, a decision made in agreement between the presidents of Kazakhstan and Vietnam.
The initiative was approved by a majority of deputies.
