Almaty Region Education Official Sentenced for Embezzling 686 Million Tenge

The head of the Ili District Education Department, Lyazzat Katkeyeva, along with seven accountants from the same office, has been convicted of embezzling 686 million tenge in public funds, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Anti-Corruption Agency (Antikor), Katkeyeva and her accomplices used a scheme involving compensation to individuals not working in the education sector.
Katkeyeva was also found guilty of abusing her position by assigning her personal driver to a role as a career guidance specialist at a local school, through which he received 4.9 million tenge in salary.
She was detained in February 2024. During the investigation, her husband, Kairat Katkeyev, filed complaints with the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Presidential Administration, accusing investigators of misconduct.
Katkeyeva herself submitted a written appeal from her pre-trial detention cell.
The court sentenced her to eight years in prison and issued a lifetime ban on holding any public office.
The seven accountants received prison sentences ranging from seven to eight years, along with 10-year bans from public service roles.
The verdict has not entered into legal force.
