Data from the Climate Trace platform suggests that Almaty’s Thermal Power Plant-2 is one of the world’s largest sources of fine particulate emissions, Orda.kz reports.
The Almaty Air Initiative Foundation analyzed Climate Trace data, which relies on satellite monitoring and AI to track global pollution sources.
The analysis showed that one of the three major stationary sources of PM 2.5 emissions in Almaty is among the top 10 polluters for this indicator among all monitored facilities worldwide, the foundation stated.
PM2.5 refers to airborne particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller, commonly produced during fuel combustion.
In September, the independent portal HouseFresh published rankings of air quality in Asian cities. Shu was listed among the cleanest, while Qaraganda was labeled the most polluted.
