After information surfaced about the possible monument installation to Vladimir Zhirinovsky in Almaty, our editorial staff sent an official inquiry to the city Akimat.
The city administration responded as follows:
The Almaty City Department of Culture has not received any requests to install a monument to Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The Commission for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Almaty has not considered the corresponding proposal.
The Russian news agency TASS reported that they allegedly plan to erect a monument to Zhirinovsky in Almaty for his 80th birthday. Almaty is the hometown of the late politician.
At the same time, Zhirinovsky himself repeatedly spoke negatively about Kazakhstan during his lifetime and suggested renaming Almaty to Verny.
