Almaty has been recognized as the top city in Central Asia, ranking 258th out of 1,000 in a global index of world cities compiled by Oxford Economics, Orda.kz reports.
The ranking evaluates cities across five key indicators: economic performance, human capital, quality of life, environmental conditions, and governance. These factors are used to calculate an overall score for each city.
Almaty performed particularly well in the human capital category, ranking 64th globally. It also scored reasonably in quality of life (245th) and economics (346th). However, the city fared poorly in governance, placing 613th, and even worse in environmental sustainability, where it ranked 726th.
Despite challenges in management and environmental conditions, Almaty outperformed other cities in the region. For comparison, Astana ranked 276th, Tashkent 471st, Bishkek 498th, Shymkent 534th, Ashgabat 623rd, and Dushanbe 683rd.
Globally, New York, London, and Paris secured the top three spots. Other cities in the top ten include San Jose, Seattle, Melbourne, Sydney, Boston, Tokyo, and San Francisco. Beijing ranked 152nd, while Moscow came in at 317th.
The most livable cities were concentrated in Europe and North America, while the lowest-ranked cities were largely in India, China, Africa, and parts of Russia. The bottom of the list — 1,000th place — was occupied by Sokoto, Nigeria.
