An exhibition of Taiwanese artists planned at the Central State Museum in Almaty has been cancelled, Orda.kz reports.
The show, “Shifting Grounds: Dissonance, Memory, and Landscape as a Site of Becoming,” was scheduled to open on September 12.
But the day before the opening, the museum terminated its contract with the organizers.
The museum’s press service told an Orda.kz correspondent that the cancellation was “technical” but offered no further details. The Chinese Embassy in Astana could not be reached for comment, and the event announcement has since been removed from the website.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the decision, calling it “unreasonable” and arguing that Beijing’s interference was “all too obvious.” The ministry’s statement, cited by the Liberty Times, stressed:
“Art and culture should be outside of politics, but China ‘grossly interfered and prevented’ the exhibition from taking place.”
The statement comes amid related tensions in Prague, where protesters waving Chinese flags gathered outside the Czech National Museum on September 11 during the opening of an exhibition of artifacts from Taiwan’s National Palace Museum.
