Alimnur Turganbay was detained in China on July 23, according to his family, Orda.kz reports.
His wife and daughter recorded a video appeal to the president outside the Almaty akimat, asking the authorities to help bring Turganbay back home.
According to the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan confirmed his arrest, allegedly linked to dual citizenship.
"However, his relatives claim they officially renounced Chinese citizenship," the bureau noted.
This is not the first time the family has publicly appealed to the authorities.
Previous demonstrations outside the Chinese consulate and the Foreign Ministry office ended with their detention and fines. This time, police limited themselves to a warning.
