Alik Aidarbayev Appointed General Director of Kalamkas-Khazar Operating

Alik Aidarbayev has taken over as General Director of Kalamkas-Khazar Operating, Orda.kz reports.
Former Chair of the Board of KazMunayGas and ex-akim of Mangystau Region assumed his new role in early July. Before this, Aidarbayev served as Deputy Director for Marine Projects at Lukoil Lubricants Central Asia.
In 2023, Aidarbayev was mentioned in connection with the Kazakhstan MMA Federation, where he had served as president. The organization raised concerns over a lack of communication and financial issues, including reported debts of around 100 million tenge.
An open letter from coaches and athletes urged him to reconnect with the sports community. Comments also pointed to concerns about transparency and funding efficiency.
Kalamkas-Khazar Operating is managing the development of the Kalamkas-Sea and Khazar fields on the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea. The joint venture between KazMunayGas and Lukoil is currently in the basic design phase, with offshore platform construction expected to begin by 2026.
The total project cost is estimated at $6 billion. Around 300 jobs are expected during the operational phase, with up to 2,000 during development.
In 2024, Russia’s Lukoil acquired a 50% stake in the company.
Production is expected to launch jointly with KazMunayGas between 2028 and 2029. According to energy expert Nurlan Zhumagulov, the project is considered strategic, with plans to build offshore platforms locally and train regional workers for roles in the oil and gas sector.
