Police have searched the home of activist Amangeldy Dzhakhin, chair of the organizing committee of the unregistered Alga, Kazakhstan! party, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights, Dzhakhin was detained in Kokshetau and is currently being held in a temporary detention facility:
The arrest is related to a criminal case under Article 405, Part 2 of the Criminal Code (participation in the activities of a prohibited organization) and Article 258, Part 1 (financing activities related to extremism).
In July, a court fined prominent human rights defender Bakhytzhan Toregozhina 78,600 tenge over a social media post about marathon runner and activist Marat Zhylanbayev.
Toregozhina had written that his health was deteriorating, citing his hunger strike at the time. The court ruled the information false, despite her insisting the post reflected the activist’s real condition.
