The Appeals Board of the West Kazakhstan Regional Court partially satisfied the appeal of 17-year-old Russian citizen Timur Turkov, who fled to Kazakhstan last fall, Orda.kz reports, citing the newspaper Uralskaya Nedelya.
The court overturned the juvenile court’s decision to expel him to Russia.
Recall that in early September last year, the teenager crossed Kazakhstan’s border near the Syrym checkpoint and turned himself in to border guards. He said he wanted to obtain refugee status.
Turkov explained that he left Russia because he disagreed with the country’s political course and feared that, after turning 18, he could be sent to war.
Police opened a criminal case. For the duration of the investigation, the teenager was placed in a center for children in need of special social services in the village of Zachagansk.
In December, the juvenile court in Uralsk found Turkov guilty of illegally crossing the state border. The court fined him, ordered his expulsion from Kazakhstan, and banned him from entering the country for five years.
However, with the support of human rights activists and a lawyer, the teenager managed to appeal this decision.
