Ukrainian drones launched a large-scale attack on Russia’s Saratov region, which borders Kazakhstan, on the morning of March 20, Orda.kz reports, citing Idel.Realii.
According to Saratov Governor Roman Busargin, this was the most powerful strike on the region since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that 54 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the area.
Reports indicate that the attack targeted both Saratov and Engels, with the primary objective being the Engels-2 strategic bomber airfield.
Ukrainian analysts report that the strike hit an ammunition warehouse, causing a powerful explosion. It shattered windows in nearby houses, tore off roofs and fences, and triggered secondary detonations, Idel.Realli writes.
Local authorities reported damage to about 30 private houses and summer cottages. Residents living near the airfield were evacuated, and a state of emergency was declared in Engels.
This is not the first major Ukrainian drone strike on a region neighboring Kazakhstan. In early January, Ukraine’s armed forces attacked an oil depot in Engels, which took several days to extinguish.
