Turkistan Region: Court Sentences Two for Extremist Activities

A verdict has been announced in the Turkistan region against two individuals affiliated with extremist organizations, according to the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan, reports Orda.kz.
According to officials, a resident of the Jambyl region created a Telegram channel called "For Islam" several months ago.
On this channel, he allegedly shared videos from internationally recognized terrorist organizations, including the "Muslim Brotherhood*" and "Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan,*" both of which are banned in Kazakhstan.
The second individual, originally from the Turkistan region, reportedly used WhatsApp messenger and Facebook to promote the extremist movement Hizb ut-Tahrir,* also banned in Kazakhstan.
The court sentenced both individuals to seven years in a maximum security prison colony. The sentences have already taken effect.
In November 2024, authorities reported that a group associated with Hizb ut-Tahrir* was disbanded in Kentau.

*Hizb ut-Tahrir has been officially banned in Kazakhstan since March 28, 2005. The Muslim Brotherhood has been banned in Kazakhstan since March 15, 2005, following a judgment by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has been banned in Kazakhstan since October 15, 2004, following a decision by the Supreme Court.
