A first-year student at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has died, Orda.kz has learned.
The Bostandyq District Police Department confirmed that a criminal case has been opened. Investigators are currently working to determine the motives and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police later stated that family issues may have played a role.
Sources say the tragedy occurred in the afternoon of July 30. The student, who was studying Turkology, may have taken this step due to academic difficulties — including the risk of being held back or an inability to pay for tuition.
A source told Orda.kz that following the incident, university officials checked employees' phones to prevent photos or videos from leaking online.
Until 6:00 p.m., the doors to the rector’s office were tightly closed from the inside, and no one was allowed in. The employees’ phones were checked,
the source said.
